2022 resolution check - four months

Oops, almost a month off, but here it is:

Every two months, I check in to see how I'm doing on my New Year's resolutions. This year I'm changing the way I score each check-in. I'm supposed to be working throughout the course of twelve months so the scoring should reflect that. I will score myself from 0-2 with a 2 being I did well. Each month the goal is to score a 20.

Let's check in on how I did in the first two months:

  • To finish several projects I've started and haven't completed, including staying on Tom until we have completed our will - I'm not sure I remember the other projects, but no movement in getting the hubby toward drafting a will. I might just have to do my own without him. Score: 0

  • To establish a daily business routine with hours and keep to it - This one is tough when you work from home. There is the exercising and the writing business and then there is everything else that I'm responsible for--dog, laundry, cleaning, pool, dinner. Still, I've got a little routine going. Score: 1

  • Begin a healthy eating/workout regiment - Working out is YES, and healthy eating is so so. Score: 1.5

  • Create my author's website and increase my author's social media presence - No problem with my social media. In fact, I led an April social media campaign for our writer's group where I manage TWO accounts. But nothing on the author's website. Score: 1

  • Have a monthly dinner calendar, so I'm not struggling to know what to cook at night - This one I have done for five months and counting. Score: 2

  • To finish my mess, that is book one. Finish book three. Edit both. Learn the self-publishing industry - Cooking right now on editing book one but that's it. Score: 1

  • Eat weekly meals at a table and not in front of the TV - I would count this one as a win, although, depending on who is here and our tv schedule, I have faltered a few times. Score: 2

  • Go on several girl trips - So far, so good! Score: 2

  • Purchase birthday cards and prepare for sending out at the beginning of the month - Uh, yeah, that one dropped from the beginning. I have a list now of all the nieces and nephews I owe cards and gifts. Ugh. I don't know why this one is so hard for me. Score: 0

  • Get back to blogging on my personal site. - Catching up on that one. Score: 1

Total Score: 11.5 out of 20 - Better than the last check by .5. I'll take that as an improvement.

Crossfit competition number 2

After a taste of standing on the podium, the Crackheads were hungry. Darcy signed them up for another competition, and they went to work. This one was in Lakeland, Florida, and their cheering contingent (that was me from our house) had to rise early to make the 9:00 start time.

This one was indoors at the fitness warehouse. No air conditioning. It was women only, and two competitions competed simultaneously--CrossFit and weight lifting. There was plenty to see and do. The competition was sponsored by Darcy's sports physical therapy group, so her therapist was there, working and cheering her on.

There were four rounds.

  • Burpees, handstand walks, pistol squats, and bar muscle-ups.
  • Air squats, power clean 65, and shoulder to overhead 65, and ring row
  • Rowing, biking, and D-ball over shoulder 20
  • Dumbbell snatch 20, double DB squat 20, and double KB C&J 20
They kicked ass! It was fantastic to watch. We knew it was close after the second round. The announcer highlighted them, running over to check their scores and shouting out their times.

They took second! They were pumped!

Now, they'll have to do it again because the first place is RIGHT THERE...

Easter 2022

I spent Easter in Pennsylvania with a precocious 12-year-old. She'll tell you that I made her hunt eggs. Secretly, she enjoyed it. I had planned to bring stuff with me for the big day, but time and my poor memory screwed that up, and I had to shop for stuff during one of our daily errand run-around days. I also ordered a gift on Amazon for next-day delivery. Easter - check!

My plan was to stuff eggs with puzzle pieces that would have to be put together to find the clue. I did this years ago with my girls, and it was a huge hit. The problem was I went with the 24-piece puzzle instead of the 48-piece one, and Steph pointed out that those weren't going to fit inside the plastic eggs. Her suggestion to fold the puzzle pieces was not helpful, but then again, this is the mother who got fed up over something or another one Easter and yelled, "There is NO Easter Bunny!"

I decided to channel my inner Kelly (that's our friend whose creativity we miss) and stuffed treasure hunt clues I got off the Internet (I am NOT like Kelly in coming up with my own). Then I hid the puzzle pieces that morning while everyone was occupied. I was so organized that I didn't mess up!

First, we hunted the eggs. I made Maggie's older brother participate, but there wasn't much pushback on that. Apparently, other PA parents have kept up the Easter Egg hunting tradition in our house, and I look forward to the day, say, six months from now when these eggs are discovered. (A group of the over twenty-year-olds slept where we hid the eggs after a night before Easter liquid overindulgence. Not that we in any way are blaming them.)

Luckily, only one egg with a clue was missing. Maggie found her eggs first and began the treasure hunt. She was good at figuring out the clues, although I gave hints on a few.

Clue number 9 said: I have all the clues, can create many a thing, there's really no telling what my keys and mouse might bring.

Maggie: "That's you, Cara. Let me search you."

Me: "Flattery will get you very far with me."

Thus the hints!

Once she had all the puzzle pieces, Maggie built it, flipped it over with precision (and the help of a flat tray and spatula), and then wandered while repeating the clue. It didn't take her long to find her basket. Nate had to stop to run an errand, but when he returned, he gave it his all.

Nate: "Somewhere I never go? I don't know. The laundry room?"

The baskets were in the dryer. They were a hit. So was the game. Then Maggie made everyone an Easter breakfast.

Later that day, we took Auntie Kim to the train station for her return home. Then we had Easter dinner provided by the Hershey Country Club. We ate salmon, beef, potatoes, veggies, several salad varieties, and dessert choices. A few family and friends came, and we spent the rest of the evening talking and telling stories.

A very nice Easter.

Darcy: "Well, I'm glad it was because the Easter bunny didn't come to our house! I'm just saying..."

Can this be our last moving day?

Darcy is out of the house! Moving took two days of heavy lifting, stair climbing, renting trucks, building furniture, and tension. That came on the mother/daughter side and had more to do with proving she could manage independently. Unfortunately, the apartment was not move-in ready, and while this was not her fault, she was concerned it put a flag on a judgment list she assumed I kept.

We hashed all of that out later.

Friday's moving involved the two of us unpacking our cars with what she and Oleg had loaded the night before--in the dark. Tom's headlight (that is a story in itself, and one I should blog) came in handy. Although every time Darcy looked at us, we were blinded by the light.

Darcy and I arrived at the complex at the same time. She signed paperwork and went over things with the apartment rental lady (APL), who seemed angry at having to do her job. No, maybe more put out--exasperated. For example, she gave out one guest parking pass. I piped in and asked for another since we would have several loaded guest cars tomorrow.

ARL: "I can't just give you nine guest passes!"

Where she came up with that number is beyond me, but Darcy smiled and asked for one more. She begrudgingly gave it.

We were given the keys, and when the property manager, a much nicer woman, offered to walk us to the apartment, Darcy told her we had it. In hindsight, we should have taken her up on that offer.

The apartment is two levels, painted the gray color I'd like for my own home, and was spacious. In the back is a little porch with a sliding glass door. I went to test the door and discovered there was no handle. There was a lock and a security bar but no handle. Opening it, the door leaned outward instead of rolling to my right. I told Darcy she should call about that.

Meanwhile, Darcy's friend arrived, and they left me to pick up the rental van to get Darcy's newly purchased bedroom furniture. I set about unloading boxes and cleaning scuff marks off of the walls. A knock sounded at the door. I opened it to find the maintenance man and his minion. I knew who he was because he'd come into the office while Darcy was signing papers, and I witnessed an exchange between him and APL regarding repairs. He was worse than her in his attitude.

He marched into the apartment, pointed at the back door, and loudly asked if I had an issue with the back fence.

Me: "No. I called about the sliding glass door. It doesn't open properly."

Him: "It's safe. Right here is the security bar."

Me: "It isn't safe. It doesn't open properly."

Him: "There aren't any rollers."

Me: "How do I get those?"

Him: "Call the office! Tell the office! But I can't do everything! They want that from me, and it isn't possible. Tell the office! But I won't get to it today."

He was marching back to the front door while he gave this speech in an angry, stop-bothering-me-with-nonsense-lady voice. Before I could utter a word, he and his minion had walked out and climbed aboard their golf cart.

Him: "Tell the office."

They drove away. I hiked to the office, arriving just as ARL appeared outside for a smoke break. She was not happy to see me. I wasn't any happier at having to seek her out. We had an exchange where I mentioned the rudeness of the maintenance man. She told me to tell her about it, she'd been dealing with him since August, and she'd report it all to the property manager. I mentioned my husband's employment with law enforcement, something I often do much to the girl's amusement. But why wouldn't I use what I have? That is a lesson I've taught them. One day, maybe they will see the benefit. told her he would not be happy about the security and shook my head like she did not even want to mess with my six-two, scarecrow hulking husband.

She was unimpressed and lit up her cigarette. I left.

I turned the wrong way. I hiked until I reached the back of the property, where I found the maintenance man hiding around the corner, just sitting on his golf cart.

Him: "You lost?" He found this hilarious.

Me: "I am."

I turned back around, saw the pond, and headed that way.

Him: "You can't go there unless you can--uh--walk on--"

Me: "Swim?"

Him: (more hilarious laughter) "Yes, swim! Unless you swim, you have to go all the way around."

I contemplated hopping on his golf cart and demanding he return me to the apartment, but I managed he would tell me that was against the rules, so I refrained from shooting him the bird and hiked back to Darcy's place, frantically texting her that I was lost.

When I returned, there came another knock on the door. ARL had sent another guy to check out the safety of the sliding glass door.

Other Guy: "I don't work here. I'm just helping out. They are swamped."

He was very nice. He told me the door was missing rollers, that it couldn't be repaired until parts were ordered, that the handle was missing and would need to be replaced, and agreed things were secure as long as it remained broken.

Other Guy: "I mean, opening it will be a problem. Keep the security bar locked in place. They'll get to it when they can. I don't work here, but I'll let them know what I found. Sorry, this is happening. I hope the rest of your move goes well."

Darcy and her friend showed up in the rental van and proceeded to unload the furniture. We worried about getting the dresser box out and in since I can't lift things. I suggested we take boxes out of the dumpster, open them, and use them to push the furniture. It worked like a charm!

Who needs a man?

The next day Darcy's roomie, Sofie, and the rest of the gang descended. We unloaded Sofie's rental van by forming a line and handing items over to each other. While the men lifted and carried furniture upstairs, Darcy and Sofie unloaded boxes and put things away, and Madison and I put together bar stools and the kitchen table. We had a lunch break and continued until everything significant was unloaded and set up.

She runs all over the state in several different counties, so she will be here at times when working in this county. But we will miss her while she lives the life of an independent adult.
Fly, little bird, fly!

Club Wyndham Kingstown Reef

This was my first time at the Kingstown Reef Orlando property. It is very colorful. Each building is painted a different pastel shade. It is also quiet. I'm not sure if there weren't many people booked or if they were all at the Orlando parks, but it was like we were one of a handful of visitors.

I booked a two-bedroom deluxe. I was put into a two-bedroom. Not sure if there is a difference, but our unit was more than adequate for two people. It was spacious, nicely decorated, and the chairs more comfortable than the last I've sat in at various Wyndhams. The couch, however, not so much. Do they want people to stay?

While Madison was out, I spent my days writing and my nights either reading or watching mindless TV. The first night I decided I'd finally use the master spa tub that is always in Orlando units. Not, however, in this unit. It makes sense. Who uses those tubs other than young children? But it was funny no tub was available when this time I went for a bath.

Despite being on International Drive, it is more on the backside of the crowds, and there are off roads to avoid traffic for getting to restaurants and the grocery nearby. I visited the pool only to look at it as we left for home because I thought it would be crowded during the day. I should've gone. Less than five people were there.

My unit wasn't as clean as I'm used to at other resorts. The shower tile was yellowed, the master bathroom floor had smudged dirt spots, and the stovetop was filthy. Both bathroom sinks had drainage problems, and the second bathroom's shower filled and drained slowly. Minor complaints that didn't bother me. I let the front desk know about the maintenance issues upon checking out.

I'd stay here again.
