Monday morning football recap - week 6

Steelers - A win!  A win!  We got a win, a win!  It wasn't pretty.  We weren't playing a great team.  We had more rest.  Who cares?  We won!  Who knew it could feel this good?
  • Shaun Suisham - He kicked a total of 159 yards in four field goals and PAT.
  • 600 wins - This win put the Steelers in the record books with 600 wins, including the postseason.  The Steelers are only one of four teams to have this accomplishment.
  • Run, Ben, run - That is what I yelled when he was under pressure on third down near the red zone and by golly, this time he did.  He ran for 11 yards and got the first down.  I wish he would have more confidence in running because the guy is huge and able to twist and turn his way out of tackles.  I'm sure he is afraid of getting injured, but at this point at 1-4 we have to try everything.
  • Defense - No more talk of no picks or turnovers.  The defense stepped up today and grabbed two interceptions.  Now if we can just score some touchdowns after making those picks we will be on our way back.
  • Trick plays - They finally went back to their old play book and tried two trick plays with Ben getting the ball to Antonio Brown who became the passer.  He completed one, but was sacked on the other, but it was nice to see us trying those plays.
  • Offense - It wasn't anything great, but it was steady and sweet with Ben completing short passes and leading the guys down the field with first downs that also took time off of the clock.
  • Beginning - This is by no means an indication that the Steelers are out of the woods.  They will have to do a hell of a lot better next week against their division rivals the Baltimore Ravens.  I hope they keep the fire burning, get back to practicing their butts off, and keep digging their way out of the hole they sunk themselves into on day one.
Other:
  • Adrian Peterson -  His two year old son was beaten to death two days ago and still he played.  I have an opinion, but I've learned when a parent loses a child to keep my mouth closed.  He did fairly well, but the Vikings still lost.  I like Peterson and the way he plays ball.  I'm sorry for his loss and wish him and his family peace.
  • Texans - Seriously, the state of Texas has got to calm down when it comes to football.  Yes, I watched Friday Night Lights, but to harass a quarterback at his home and then to cheer when he is injured?  Somewhere along the line respect and class as a human being has to override the love of football.
  • Coach Schiano - The front page of our sports section this morning spread the news that Schiano was supposedly responsible for the leak of ex-quarterback's Josh Freeman's participation in the NFL substance abuse program.  No shock there for me.  I hope the Bucs organization looks into this accusation and if true fires this guy.
  • MRSA - Another Tampa Bay player was diagnosed with MRSA this week, although the infectious disease experts think it came from outside the locker room.  I liked that the organization called in the experts at Duke University to talk to not only Bucs players, but the visiting Eagles team as well.  Everyone needs to be educated on this virus that most of the time has to be treated with an IV antibiotic and is quite contagious.  But shouldn't this have been done from the get go with the first diagnosis?  Instead the Bucs threw the first guy, kicker Lawrence Tynes, under the bus, forcing him to fill a grievance and eventually I'm sure a lawsuit.
  • Jaguars - This is the first time I've seen the Jags play, and I have to say they didn't look like an 0-6 team to me.  Quarterback Chad Henne had some nice throws.  Justin Blackmon was a monster on receiving.  The defense made some nice plays in stopping the Broncos offense.  If Manning and Co. hadn't gotten their heads straight the Jags would have won that game.
  • Rob Gronkowski Injury - The Patriots tight end hasn't played all season due to an injuries he suffered last season.  He has had four surgeries on his arm and has not been cleared by doctors to play this season.  Speculation is rampant about what is going on and whether or not, what?  He is faking?  Lying?  I don't know the guy or much about him, but if he isn't playing in games then why is he practicing during the week?  Isn't there a rule about that at least?
  • Chiefs - 10 sacks in their game against the Raiders?  Someone dropped the line somewhere.  3 interception that were turned into 17 points for the opposition?  Someone needs to get back to the drawing board.  Meanwhile?  The Chiefs are undefeated.
