Easter 2022

I spent Easter in Pennsylvania with a precocious 12-year-old. She'll tell you that I made her hunt eggs. Secretly, she enjoyed it. I had planned to bring stuff with me for the big day, but time and my poor memory screwed that up, and I had to shop for stuff during one of our daily errand run-around days. I also ordered a gift on Amazon for next-day delivery. Easter - check!

My plan was to stuff eggs with puzzle pieces that would have to be put together to find the clue. I did this years ago with my girls, and it was a huge hit. The problem was I went with the 24-piece puzzle instead of the 48-piece one, and Steph pointed out that those weren't going to fit inside the plastic eggs. Her suggestion to fold the puzzle pieces was not helpful, but then again, this is the mother who got fed up over something or another one Easter and yelled, "There is NO Easter Bunny!"

I decided to channel my inner Kelly (that's our friend whose creativity we miss) and stuffed treasure hunt clues I got off the Internet (I am NOT like Kelly in coming up with my own). Then I hid the puzzle pieces that morning while everyone was occupied. I was so organized that I didn't mess up!

First, we hunted the eggs. I made Maggie's older brother participate, but there wasn't much pushback on that. Apparently, other PA parents have kept up the Easter Egg hunting tradition in our house, and I look forward to the day, say, six months from now when these eggs are discovered. (A group of the over twenty-year-olds slept where we hid the eggs after a night before Easter liquid overindulgence. Not that we in any way are blaming them.)

Luckily, only one egg with a clue was missing. Maggie found her eggs first and began the treasure hunt. She was good at figuring out the clues, although I gave hints on a few.

Clue number 9 said: I have all the clues, can create many a thing, there's really no telling what my keys and mouse might bring.

Maggie: "That's you, Cara. Let me search you."

Me: "Flattery will get you very far with me."

Thus the hints!

Once she had all the puzzle pieces, Maggie built it, flipped it over with precision (and the help of a flat tray and spatula), and then wandered while repeating the clue. It didn't take her long to find her basket. Nate had to stop to run an errand, but when he returned, he gave it his all.

Nate: "Somewhere I never go? I don't know. The laundry room?"

The baskets were in the dryer. They were a hit. So was the game. Then Maggie made everyone an Easter breakfast.

Later that day, we took Auntie Kim to the train station for her return home. Then we had Easter dinner provided by the Hershey Country Club. We ate salmon, beef, potatoes, veggies, several salad varieties, and dessert choices. A few family and friends came, and we spent the rest of the evening talking and telling stories.

A very nice Easter.

Darcy: "Well, I'm glad it was because the Easter bunny didn't come to our house! I'm just saying..."

Can this be our last moving day?

Darcy is out of the house! Moving took two days of heavy lifting, stair climbing, renting trucks, building furniture, and tension. That came on the mother/daughter side and had more to do with proving she could manage independently. Unfortunately, the apartment was not move-in ready, and while this was not her fault, she was concerned it put a flag on a judgment list she assumed I kept.

We hashed all of that out later.

Friday's moving involved the two of us unpacking our cars with what she and Oleg had loaded the night before--in the dark. Tom's headlight (that is a story in itself, and one I should blog) came in handy. Although every time Darcy looked at us, we were blinded by the light.

Darcy and I arrived at the complex at the same time. She signed paperwork and went over things with the apartment rental lady (APL), who seemed angry at having to do her job. No, maybe more put out--exasperated. For example, she gave out one guest parking pass. I piped in and asked for another since we would have several loaded guest cars tomorrow.

ARL: "I can't just give you nine guest passes!"

Where she came up with that number is beyond me, but Darcy smiled and asked for one more. She begrudgingly gave it.

We were given the keys, and when the property manager, a much nicer woman, offered to walk us to the apartment, Darcy told her we had it. In hindsight, we should have taken her up on that offer.

The apartment is two levels, painted the gray color I'd like for my own home, and was spacious. In the back is a little porch with a sliding glass door. I went to test the door and discovered there was no handle. There was a lock and a security bar but no handle. Opening it, the door leaned outward instead of rolling to my right. I told Darcy she should call about that.

Meanwhile, Darcy's friend arrived, and they left me to pick up the rental van to get Darcy's newly purchased bedroom furniture. I set about unloading boxes and cleaning scuff marks off of the walls. A knock sounded at the door. I opened it to find the maintenance man and his minion. I knew who he was because he'd come into the office while Darcy was signing papers, and I witnessed an exchange between him and APL regarding repairs. He was worse than her in his attitude.

He marched into the apartment, pointed at the back door, and loudly asked if I had an issue with the back fence.

Me: "No. I called about the sliding glass door. It doesn't open properly."

Him: "It's safe. Right here is the security bar."

Me: "It isn't safe. It doesn't open properly."

Him: "There aren't any rollers."

Me: "How do I get those?"

Him: "Call the office! Tell the office! But I can't do everything! They want that from me, and it isn't possible. Tell the office! But I won't get to it today."

He was marching back to the front door while he gave this speech in an angry, stop-bothering-me-with-nonsense-lady voice. Before I could utter a word, he and his minion had walked out and climbed aboard their golf cart.

Him: "Tell the office."

They drove away. I hiked to the office, arriving just as ARL appeared outside for a smoke break. She was not happy to see me. I wasn't any happier at having to seek her out. We had an exchange where I mentioned the rudeness of the maintenance man. She told me to tell her about it, she'd been dealing with him since August, and she'd report it all to the property manager. I mentioned my husband's employment with law enforcement, something I often do much to the girl's amusement. But why wouldn't I use what I have? That is a lesson I've taught them. One day, maybe they will see the benefit. told her he would not be happy about the security and shook my head like she did not even want to mess with my six-two, scarecrow hulking husband.

She was unimpressed and lit up her cigarette. I left.

I turned the wrong way. I hiked until I reached the back of the property, where I found the maintenance man hiding around the corner, just sitting on his golf cart.

Him: "You lost?" He found this hilarious.

Me: "I am."

I turned back around, saw the pond, and headed that way.

Him: "You can't go there unless you can--uh--walk on--"

Me: "Swim?"

Him: (more hilarious laughter) "Yes, swim! Unless you swim, you have to go all the way around."

I contemplated hopping on his golf cart and demanding he return me to the apartment, but I managed he would tell me that was against the rules, so I refrained from shooting him the bird and hiked back to Darcy's place, frantically texting her that I was lost.

When I returned, there came another knock on the door. ARL had sent another guy to check out the safety of the sliding glass door.

Other Guy: "I don't work here. I'm just helping out. They are swamped."

He was very nice. He told me the door was missing rollers, that it couldn't be repaired until parts were ordered, that the handle was missing and would need to be replaced, and agreed things were secure as long as it remained broken.

Other Guy: "I mean, opening it will be a problem. Keep the security bar locked in place. They'll get to it when they can. I don't work here, but I'll let them know what I found. Sorry, this is happening. I hope the rest of your move goes well."

Darcy and her friend showed up in the rental van and proceeded to unload the furniture. We worried about getting the dresser box out and in since I can't lift things. I suggested we take boxes out of the dumpster, open them, and use them to push the furniture. It worked like a charm!

Who needs a man?

The next day Darcy's roomie, Sofie, and the rest of the gang descended. We unloaded Sofie's rental van by forming a line and handing items over to each other. While the men lifted and carried furniture upstairs, Darcy and Sofie unloaded boxes and put things away, and Madison and I put together bar stools and the kitchen table. We had a lunch break and continued until everything significant was unloaded and set up.

She runs all over the state in several different counties, so she will be here at times when working in this county. But we will miss her while she lives the life of an independent adult.
Fly, little bird, fly!

Club Wyndham Kingstown Reef

This was my first time at the Kingstown Reef Orlando property. It is very colorful. Each building is painted a different pastel shade. It is also quiet. I'm not sure if there weren't many people booked or if they were all at the Orlando parks, but it was like we were one of a handful of visitors.

I booked a two-bedroom deluxe. I was put into a two-bedroom. Not sure if there is a difference, but our unit was more than adequate for two people. It was spacious, nicely decorated, and the chairs more comfortable than the last I've sat in at various Wyndhams. The couch, however, not so much. Do they want people to stay?

While Madison was out, I spent my days writing and my nights either reading or watching mindless TV. The first night I decided I'd finally use the master spa tub that is always in Orlando units. Not, however, in this unit. It makes sense. Who uses those tubs other than young children? But it was funny no tub was available when this time I went for a bath.

Despite being on International Drive, it is more on the backside of the crowds, and there are off roads to avoid traffic for getting to restaurants and the grocery nearby. I visited the pool only to look at it as we left for home because I thought it would be crowded during the day. I should've gone. Less than five people were there.

My unit wasn't as clean as I'm used to at other resorts. The shower tile was yellowed, the master bathroom floor had smudged dirt spots, and the stovetop was filthy. Both bathroom sinks had drainage problems, and the second bathroom's shower filled and drained slowly. Minor complaints that didn't bother me. I let the front desk know about the maintenance issues upon checking out.

I'd stay here again.

Forgive my lapse

Following Spring Break, things got nuts. Let's play catch-up in my world since I haven't kept to my resolutions to "getting back to blogging!"

  • I attended a writer's conference on the opposite coast for three days. I traveled with and shared a room with a friend from my local writer's group. One thing I learned? That motels no longer clean your room unless you ask for that at registration. We learned this after tossing our used towels into a wet bathtub. Luckily for us, we were given new sets upon asking. Several new sets! Because apparently, the front desk workers don't communicate with the housekeeping staff.
  • Darcy is leaving the nest to spread her wings. Since living costs have more than doubled in our area, she is doing this with a roommate. After a year, they'll have paid out in rent roughly the same amount people save for a downpayment on a house! It's crazy! She has decided not to take her twin bed from home, so she is currently mattress shopping. Oleg and I tagged along for a late afternoon of furniture/mattress shopping, where I came up with a business model for one mattress store. I suggested he have "couples evenings" where people could spend the night trying out a mattress. He and I discussed the pros and cons (they'd bring their own bedding/he'd have to pay an employee overnight) while the other two focused on the task at hand. Alas, no purchase was made, and the owner decided my business proposal wasn't doable.

  • My good friend lost her spouse after an 18-year-long battle with incurable cancer. I flew to Pennsylvania for the funeral. One where everyone but the governor of PA attended. I stayed with the family, and I hope I helped in some little way. The weather was finicky, going from 84 degrees into the low thirties with sleet and snow. We spent a lot of time enjoying cocktails on the back patio every evening, and I discovered a quality rum I am now searching for here at home. Meals were brought to her most evenings (and some mornings), and she had enough flower arrangements to plant a botanical garden. She is surrounded by many friends and family and has tons of support, but after 18 years of hanging tough, it's a damn shame.
  • Returning home after a week away, I discovered no one had clean clothes, noticed the dirty kitchen floor and dust on the furniture, or bothered to repair things that somehow ended up broken.
  • After twenty-plus years of staring at the same bedroom light fixture, I announced it was time for a new one. A few days later, the switch broke, forcing Tom to concede. Somehow I talked him into a new fan/light combo he installed that afternoon. It comes with a remote that he attached above our light switch while I was in PA. I'm sure he hoped this would deter me from increasing the fan's rotation. But he forgets that he usually goes to bed before me, so thus far, it hasn't been an issue.

  • Grammy has moved! She decided at Christmas it was time to move into an independent living facility, and she and her daughter found a nice one not far from where she lived. She is settled in her home with her baby grand piano, and if she leaves the door open, residents flock to hear her play. We're pretty sure she will be running the place before too long.
  • I lost a massive chunk of my writing when something happened to my account on a paid site. I did not panic. I'm proud of that. Instead, I had several email communications with a nice young man, and while I was off in PA, it was fixed!
  • Madison and I went to Orlando for two nights. She met up with a friend she met online during the pandemic. I went along to make sure she wouldn't disappear! We stayed at a Wyndham I've never been to, and it was very quiet. I don't think they have enough employees and aren't booking people, but I can't confirm that. Still, it was a pleasant couple of days. She left me at the unit. I wrote and had a breakthrough on my chapter that's been bothering me for months.

Now, it's back to reality. I've spent the last few days making up for lost time--cleaning, laundry, and going through emails, etc. I'll photo dump in my next post!

Spring break 2022 - trip 2 - Club Wyndham Clearwater Beach

Between the twenty-four hours of trip #1 and trip #2, my youngest daughter returned from South Carolina with a stomach virus. The kind that kept us awake all night with her expelling and me cleaning. By the time my check-in time for the beach arrived, I was ready to hightail it out of Dodge.

Maddy and I took this second "staycation." We slept late, walked everywhere, ate out, and relaxed. I drank pricey beach drinks that weren't worth the money and watched the daily sunset. Somehow, and I'm blaming Darcy's illness, I arrived without a beach chair and sunscreen. That limited my activities. Because Clearwater Beach has little land available, one pool serves the resort owners' building and the hotel. Ugh. It was crowded and dirty. I went in once for an hour. The second day, instead of writing, I people-watched.

I can't say I'm a huge fan of this Club Wyndham resort. While my units (I've stayed in a four-bedroom presidential and a one-bedroom) were tidy, both furniture sets had stains and were terribly uncomfortable. In this unit, the floor mat had a dirt patch in the corner that probably could've disappeared with some elbow grease. Instead, their answer was to pull a chair over it.

There is only the one pool. The owner's lounge was a dinky room without an excellent wifi coffee machine or incentives to visit. A cabinet housed five books and several games, all with missing pieces. There are no activities for children--no fun pool games or trivia. It's a glorified hotel close to the beach. Comparing this resort to Bonnet Creek is night and day.

Still, we made the most of being out of a sick household and staring at four different walls. I met some nice folks from Wisconsin and Pennsylvania and befriended the maintenance man, so Madison got a break from listening to me.

I'll chalk this week up as a win, especially in my resolution category! Next up is a writer's conference this coming weekend on the other coast.

Spring Break 2022 - trip #1 - Club Wyndham Bonnet Creek

Tech Guy had to burn some vacation days. Because I refuse to travel outside my Club Wyndham resorts, for which I pay an exorbitant monthly maintenance fee, and since it's spring break in Florida, which means excessive plane tickets, we compromised and traveled to Orlando for a four day weekend.

It was delightful.

The resort updated us to a three-bedroom/two-bath unit. It was the size of a house. We each took a bathroom, and I used one of the bedrooms for my dressing room. I also spent the first night in the other bedroom after Tech Guy fell asleep at 9:30 p.m. across the master king-size bed.

We hiked the resort and Disney Springs. We played a round of putt-putt golf. We visited different restaurants. Tom exercised while I worked, and later, he indulged me on my quest to try craft cocktails.

On our last night, Madison and her cousin Olivia joined us. We took them upstairs to the owners' lounge on the roof and served them coffee from the fancy wifi machine, and we watched the Disney parks' fireworks from Magic Kingdom, Epcot, and Hollywood Studios.

Traffic was a nightmare coming and going. Where are these people headed on a Monday afternoon? The drive that should take us a little over an hour took longer than two. Still, it was nice to get away and travel again. Also, in Florida, easy to forget masks, social distancing, and sanitizing our hands. Ugh.

We returned home Monday night just in time to welcome Darcy home from her trip to South Carolina. She brought with her a stomach bug, and the two of us were up all night while she puked and pooped.

Luckily for me, I was out of there the next day for trip number two...

Brother Birthday 2022

Happy Birthday to my one and only baby brother who thankfully makes me laugh more than he pisses me off (and he is good at punching my buttons). May your special day be filled with laughter and love. Sending you virtual hugs and a poke in the side of your belly!

2022 resolution check at two months

Every two months, I check in to see how I'm doing on my New Year's resolutions. This year I'm changing the way I score each check-in. I'm supposed to be working throughout the course of twelve months so scoring should reflect that. I will score myself from 0-2 with a 2 being I did well. Each month the goal is to score a 20.

Let's check in on how I did in the first two months:

  • To finish several projects I've started and haven't completed, including staying on Tom until we have completed our will - I have badgered Tech Guy about the will. I brought it up last night! But, alas, I have not even worked on those other projects. Score: 0

  • To establish a daily business routine with hours and keep to it - No, I have not done this either and exercise is to blame. How do working people do this and get to the office on time? Uh, work out at 5:00 a.m. you say? Yeah, not happening with this girl! Score: 0

  • Begin a healthy eating/workout regiment - Okay, this I've done fairly well, especially the workout regiment. Score: 1

  • Create my author's website and increase my author's social media presence - Yes, on social media, and I did take a class on website design, so I'm calling this one a win! Score: 2

  • Have a monthly dinner calendar, so I'm not struggling to know what to cook at night - YES! This has worked out well thus far, and I highly recommend it. I have it hanging in the kitchen so everyone knows what we are eating (although I do make a few changes depending on the number of people, ingredients, and various other reasons). Score: 2

  • To finish my mess, that is book one. Finish book three. Edit both. Learn the self-publishing industry - Okay this is like four resolutions in one. Why would I do that to myself? I have gone from book one to book three, but I could've done more editing. I took a few classes on the self-publishing business, and I purchased a set of books on the topic. Score: 1

  • Eat weekly meals at a table and not in front of the TV - YES! Okay, I'm conquering a few of these resolutions. Plus, my dining room table has gotten tons of use. Score: 2

  • Go on several girl trips - Nope. This one hasn't happened yet, but it will this month! Score: 0

  • Purchase birthday cards and prepare for sending out at the beginning of the month - I did well with January but dropped the ball in early February. I purchased the cards but did not have them ready to go out. I rallied for the middle of February and then I ran out of stamps. Those have been purchased, along with March cards, so better luck next time? Score: 1

  • Get back to blogging on my personal site. - YES! I have done well with this one, considering my life is really boring right now. Score: 2

Total Score: 11 out of 20 - Okay, okay, there is work to be done, but I'm better than halfway there this month, so I'm going to feel good about that.

Nature Tuesday

An early Florida spring is springing
