2020 resolution check

Let's be honest. Are we even counting these resolutions this year?

  • Travel (Explore and open myself to new experiences) - Uh, COVID squashed this resolution in March while traveling. Score - N/A

  • Get into an excellent mental and/or physical place where I don't mind having my picture taken. -  I figured I did this about fifty percent. Darcy said thirty. I disagreed, and then Maddy asked to take my picture, and I declined. Guess Darcy knows me better. Score: 5

  • Devise a working routine schedule Monday-Friday so that I do it and stick to it - I started great, petered off, and then rallied back. I took December off for the holiday, but I blame COVID for a mental state that had me slacking; thus, I'm figuring that into the tally. Score: 8

  • Finish editing book #1, so Maya can edit and critique it. - I have no excuse. Score: 0

  • To drink less coffee and, therefore, less creamer - Again, I blame COVID. But I really could've done better. I didn't. Score: 0

  • To tackle some old resolutions that haunt me - Yes! I'm counting this one a win. I worked on my family tree, I scanned photos into the computer, and I edited the blog. Score: 10

Total Score: 23 out of 50

Considering 2020, not too shabby. At least, that's the way I see it!

Happy New Year, peeps! Thanks for hanging in and reading my nonsensical life. May 2021 be way better than 2020 in health, happiness, and prosperity. Be nice. Help others. Wear your masks!

NFL Monday morning recap week 16

I had a meeting the second half of the game, so I had the TV on in the background of my Zoom, the Steelers website and Yahoo GameDay on my second monitor, and Oleg in the other room making noises alerting me to a score.

Who has meetings on Sundays?

Steelers:

  • Why do we start so sluggish? First series? Three and out. I could understand it in the second half, but aren't you fired up when you first start a game? We are not.
  • No run game this week. I wondered if that was deliberate. I don't think Tomlin wanted to play James Connor, but Benny Snell Jr. is more our small yardage weapon than our number one running back. But then even he got stuffed on fourth downs where we needed three or fewer yards.
  • The defense, thanks to TJ Watt, leader of the NFL in sacks, stripped the ball and got us into the red zone where Connor powdered in for the tie score.
  • Downhill from there, and at the half, it was 21-7 Colts. What does Tomlin say in the locker room? I mean, these are grown men making, combined, billions of dollars. It's not like you can go in and yell. I wondered if Tomlin watched Ted Lasso because that's the speech I would've given. Instead, the word is that Maurkice Pouncey yelled, and Ben Roethlisberger told them to get out and have fun.
  • Our plays are so predictable that the Colts defense was calling them out after reading the Steelers' offense. That's cheeky. Maybe that's what turned things around? It would certainly fire me up.
  • The second half was a different team. Ben threw out the playbook and called his own plays, relying on the past. Does that mean Todd Haley plays? Snicker, snicker.
  • Diontae Johnson redeemed himself after all the dropped passes in the last few games with a diving catch in this game to give us seven more points. Great throw by Ben and a great catch by Johnson. That's more like it!
  • The defense was on fire, but we also have to thank the Colts for the penalties. The Steelers took advantage of the penalties for once and capitalized earning points.
  • Yay, JuJu! So glad he scored. Also, Tomlin must have discussed his celebrations because he was chill after scoring. That's more like it! I wasn't all concerned with Smith-Schuster's dancing on the opposition's logo during the pre-game warm-up because I didn't think he meant it disrespectfully. He just wanted Tik Tok hits. I mean, it wasn't the Titans stomping on the Terrible Towel, but I also see how it annoyed players and fans.
  • My brother--he once a Chargers fan--told me the Steelers couldn't play against Phillip Rivers. I rolled my eyes. Like Brady, Rivers doesn't like to be on the ground, so I knew if our defense stuffed him on the turf, we'd take him. It was nice to be right.
  • The second half of the game was more like the Steelers of old. I say, let Ben run the show. It worked for Terry Bradshaw!

I didn't watch the other games due to my meeting. Needless to say, I told the writer's group that Sunday meetings were not going to work for me...

Christmas 2020 pics

I wore my Steelers Christmas sweater to my writer's group holiday party. I won for the ugliest costume (what???) but then I won the wishing star that brings good luck all year long.

Tom strung Grammy's outdoor lights with a lot of help from the peanut gallery. Later that night, we discovered the lights were not on, resulting in Tom restringing the lights. An hour later, the lights were off again. Grammy and I laughed quite a bit...Tom, not so much. Eventually, he got them up and blinking!

Most of our shopping was done online, but the one time Oleg and I ventured out, I got caught in this wrapped-around-the-store-checkout line. I endured because I really wanted my purchase, but the entire time I worried COVID would get me.

Darcy wanted Christmas photos. This pic took forever to capture and was only complete after we switched to Darcy's new iPhone, which apparently has a professional camera.

Christmas 2020

It was vastly different from previous years, but Christmas 2020 was a good one. Without anywhere to rush, we took our time in opening gifts. By devising a menu that required little cooking, we weren't in the kitchen all day. The weather was chilly, the mimosas flowed, and we had a delightful, relaxed, and laid-back holiday. Grandma Mary Anne spent the day with us, a treat, and Santa knew this, leaving Grey Goose in her stocking.

Alcohol was a theme for this year, especially for Grandma, Darcy, and Oleg. There were cocktail shakers and glasses, a bartending Swiss Army tool, muddlers, olives for martinis, and Kahlua coffee. We unwrapped clothes, scarves, slippers, and shoes. There were a few electronic gadgets and several books. We filled two trash bags with discarded wrapping paper and recycled an entire bin of Amazon boxes.

Grandma brought her famous caramel rolls, I made the crockpot breakfast casserole and peppermint coffee, and of course, we had the charcuterie board later in the day to keep our bellies quiet before dinner. We Zoomed with the Boos family and opened our Secret Santa gifts, and Facetimed with the Mason family. Dinner was simple but delicious, and afterward, we had coffee and watched Wonder Woman 1984.

A satisfactory Christmas for sure! Merry, merry to you and yours!

Florida fruits

My neighbor across the street brought us a lemon from her backyard lemon tree. Behold a Florida homegrown lemon.

Me: "What am I suppose to do with it?"

Her: "I don't know. Make lemonade?"

Monday morning NFL 2020 recap - week 14

Steelers: My prognosis before the game was that the defense would have to win this game. But watching the team come through the tunnel after warming up, I thought they looked exhausted and worn out, and my hope for a good game went out the window.

  • Typical start - one, two, three, punt, one, two, three, punt, one, two, three, punt, one, two, three, punt. For exercise, I could tap dance to the rhythm. Ugh.
  • Our offense has got to stop wasting our defensive work. Too many wasted opportunities.
  • Ben is at his best when coming from behind, but what is needed is Ben getting us ahead right from the start so he doesn't have to play the hero. Not sure how that happens. Obviously, neither do the Steelers coaches.
  • Cris Collingsworth remarked on our dropped balls from Monday's game and told us the Steelers addressed that in practice all week. Before the second quarter was over, we'd had three dropped catches. Someone dropped the ball on that issue, wouldn't you say?
  • Did we forget the Bills quarterback Josh Allen is a runner?
  • I think the Bills are the best AFC team, and I know Chiefs fans will disagree, but these guys are tough and hungry.
Other:
  • Washington's back upturned lead quarterback Alex Smith went down with a calf injury to the leg that kept him sidelined from football for two years. Detroit's quarterback Matt Stafford left because of an injury. All I could think was that to some of these guys football is more than a job.

Home improvement quarantine project #3

After project number two, things stalled. I kept getting updates that went like this:

Tom: "So and so is finishing up another project, and then he will be with us."

One of the projects that doesn't require someone working for us is the patio project. We had a patio put in some time ago, and the plan was to shade it with a sunshade sail, but nothing came of that. Now that my furniture has been redone and put out there, it is time to finish that project. Mainly because the cooler weather has lured me to the patio, and by 9:30 in the morning, I must come inside because the sun is too hot. But if I had a sunshade sail...

While writing in that area, I shopped for some small tables to hold my coffee and discovered umbrella tables. Since Tom had the week off for the holiday, I had him come outside, and I broached that idea. Why not just get two umbrellas? He contemplated the idea. It is definitely cheaper and less work, but he went back to his sail plan after measuring and discussing the concept. We decided to do a square sail instead of a triangle, and after some gentle prodding by me, he went to Home Depot and looked around.

Then, since Oleg was here too, I kept up my poking and commenting until finally, they got on the job.

With three poles in three areas, the last had to go against the house. Instead of a PVC pipe pole, Tom went with a contraption he built with Oleg's help. Then they attached it to the aluminum frame of our pool screen. My job was to find a sail. I spent considerable time (from my writing job) searching for something that fit his dimensions, and then, of course, he spent time doing it himself, choosing the one I selected, fyi.

The sail arrived after Oleg had returned to school, so I helped put it up. Tom made the mistake of unscrewing the clip on the first side to attach it to the rope on the sail instead of just attaching the rope to the clip. To screw it back in again, we stared directly into the sun, which proved to be a problem, especially when we discovered (much later) that the clip screwed in the opposite direction. He did not do this with the other three and then later returned to the hardware store to purchase clips to clip into one another in case of wind, bad weather, etc. This way, I would not have to untie the sail.

A discussion was had on which sides to remove during bad weather, and it was agreed we would remove the two on the backside so the sail would fall against the house.

A few days later, we had a rainstorm, followed by tons of wind. I went outside to return the chair cushions and discovered that the side where Tom had unscrewed the clip had came undone and was flapping in the wind. Worried the clip would break the glass on my table, I got a step ladder and attempted to remove the other side like we had discussed. I say attempted because gusts of wind kept blowing through, lifting the sail. I was holding on to the sail, and the wind was so strong I was concerned I'd end up flying over the fence into the neighbor's yard, ala Mary Poppins.

Or maybe that was wishful thinking that I've lost some weight.

Either way, I managed to unclip the side. Later, Tom unclipped all of them since the wind lasted another twenty-four hours. By the time I remembered it hadn't been put back up, Oleg was ago for the next holiday, and he and I got the sail back up and shading.

Project number four is currently in progress. Stay tuned!

Getting into the 2020 holiday spirit

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas now that Darcy and Oleg have arrived. Before that? Not so much, although I did do some decorating in the house, and Tom put the lights up outside. The tree, however, stood bare for five days.

Tom insisted we get the tree on Saturday.

Tom: "We need to go before noon because after twelve, everyone will be out tree buying, and it will be COVID central. After today, the trees will be gone."

The three of us piled in the van, and off we went to get our Christmas tree. The first place was run by the Boys Scouts. There were two in uniform, informing the five shoppers, of which we were three, that the trees were blue spruce and from somewhere way north. Each tree was tied to a stake sideways, the trunk set into pans of water. It made for difficulty in picturing the tree standing tall and straight, but if we leaned in the direction of the tree, we could imagine.

We left there after ten minutes.

In Lowe's tent, the trees were plentiful but quite thin. Normally, we look at one or two and make our decisions. This time we looked at more than ten, and Madison had to pull out her army knife to unwrap several. I wasn't all that thrilled with the selection, but Tom was correct in his assumption that noon was the witching hour. By 12:30 p.m., the tent was full of masked people not giving a damn about social distancing. I agreed with Madison and Tom's choice just to get out of there.

Madison: "It fits 2020."

Turns out, they were right.

Madison is my light girl, and she chose not to put them on until Darcy and Oleg arrived. Even then, it was a hard sale, but we guilted her enough that she finally gave in late Wednesday night.

Darcy and Oleg took over from there, hanging every ornament we owned on the skinny tree. It's holding up well, and wrapped packages are beginning to appear underneath its branches. I play holiday music every day. Oleg has made a peppermint pie to replace Darcy's favorite Village Inn pie that is not being sold this year.

Christmas 2020 has commenced.

Quarantine day 271

I'm pretty proud of this accomplishment, writing over 50,000 words for November in the NaNoWriMo event. Best thing? I completed my second book, which is definitely better than the first one. The next step is editing and then either off to market via the self-publishing route or learning the next traditional publishing steps--either way, pretty darn happy that I'm back on the writing train.
