Dog eats Peanut M&M's

Since writing on this blog, my biggest hits via Google--my most read articles--are on mock steaks and my dog eating a cupcake wrapper. These topics have been Googled, and my blog hopefully provided answers--if readers waded through my gibberish.

Out of all the helpful advice and stories I've written about my children, schooling, and my life, etc. it is my dog that has taken center stage along with the mock steak.

This entry right here could surpass the other two.

Let me just cut to the chase for those uninterested in vivid details of which I'm an expert at providing.

My dog consumed a 10-ounce package of Peanut M and M's.

Wait, let me bold that and add to it.

My dog consumed a 10-ounce package of Peanut M and M's AND LIVED.

He is a Shetland Sheepdog who weighs approximately 28 pounds give or take some hair weight. He did not consume the entire package, leaving a human-sized handful in the bag.

Apparently, he was full.

Or bored.

Or convinced he'd made his statement in retaliation for us leaving the house.

I immediately turned to Google for advice. All sorts of people from laymen to dog owners to people purporting to be vets told me the amount of chocolate found in M and M's was not enough to do harm. Not at 10 ounces.

I did not get an answer in regards to the peanuts nestled inside the chocolate.

The advice was to induce vomiting within an hour of consumption and to not give water within the first hour. None of this helpful as we did not discover this crime until LONG after that period.

He showed zero signs of distress when we discovered the heist. In fact, he ate a bowl of dog food for dinner before we found the TWO bags, one opened and consumed, the other unopened and left in an area away from the scene of the crime.

He gave us the side-eye when we questioned him, and did not respond in the affirmative to our questions: Was he sick? Did he need to vomit? Did his belly hurt?

He did not puke. He did not appear to be uncomfortable. He proceeded to wait patiently while I ate dinner in hopes that I'd share, and did the same with the hubby when he ate two hours after I did. He slept well.

He did fill two poop bags the next morning on his walk, one bag of normal poop, the second a runny consistency.

The next day the normal poop was full of peanuts--whole.

That's it.

As of forty-eight hours later.

So, to those who have a PIA dog like my own showing no signs of distress, then I wouldn't either.

But that's just my own experience. All dogs are different.

My dog has consumed a lot of yucky non-dog foods over the years, including the cupcake wrappers mentioned above, Kleenex, shrimp, and fish, and vomited. He has eaten a bag of white chocolate and a bag of Hershey kisses. This caused him to vomit and poop out the tin foil wrappers the next day.

Just an FYI. For my dog.

I hope this helps you in some way.

***For those readers who enjoy my details, or for those judging us as bad, bad dog owners, here's the whole story:

My neighbor brought over our Christmas gifts on Wednesday and put them under our tree. One of the presents was a bag of treats to Elliot from her dog, and immediately Elliot sniffed this out, nosing under the tree which he never does.

I scolded him for doing so, reminding him we didn't open gifts until Christmas morning, and after he wandered away, I thought how I should ask my neighbor if there was anything edible in the bags. But she was talking, and as I wrote yesterday, my brain is short-circuiting, and by the time she left, I'd forgotten.

I did, however, remove Elliot's present from under the tree, and I did sift through the remaining bags in search of edibles. The two small gift bags had a multitude of tissue paper, and the items were wrapped so expertly, I couldn't get them undone. After many attempts, I decided my neighbor, a dog lover owner herself, would not have edibles.

Later, I headed out for my drum lesson, and as I walked past the tree, the dog was lying on the couch watching me, with a look I didn't trust.

My dog does not like it when we've been home only for a few minutes before we head out again. The day before, I had forgotten spaghetti on my grocery run, and I'd had to run out again. I told the damn dog I'd be right back, and when I returned, he met me at the door with a tag in his mouth. I removed it, immediately searched the house, and found he'd gone through daughter #2's bedroom trashcan, by using his paw to push the lever to open the lid. From there, he removed the inner lining and emptied the contents over her floor, including an empty Twix bag in which he tore holes, decorating her bedroom with the colored foil wrappers.

With this memory burned into my brain, coupled with his look, I got suspicious and rifled again through the bags under the tree, putting one bag out of his reach, and failing still to get through the tissue paper, I decided all was well with the remaining two gift bags.

I was gone for three hours, and when I returned, I fed him dog food and then cooked dinner. It wasn't until I sat down to eat that daughter #2 informed me she'd found an entire unopened bag of Peanut M and M's in the hallway.

Darcy: "He couldn't get them opened, obviously."

Me: "Where did they come from? We don't have any Peanut M and M's around here."

Darcy: "I don't know."

Me: "Oh My God! I bet it was in the Christmas present from the neighbor! That means there were two bags! One for you and one for Maddy."

Yep. We found the second bag--empty. I panicked. Darcy panicked. Then I SnapChatted his naughty ass in hopes that others would offer helpful and sage advice. Then I turned to Google, and well, you read the beginning.

He was fine. Knock on wood. He's been fine all day and has followed that episode up with some Kleenex he dug out of the trash can in the living room. Maybe for fiber? I'm not sure. It's been a long time since he has behaved in this naughty way. I think he isn't happy our attention has gone to the returning daughter? Who knows?

Suffice it to say, this dog has caused more anxiety than my children have ever done.

I know because I blog about it all
