Rehearsal Dinner

My friend SueG jumped in, with help from Darcy’s friends, to decorate for the dinner while we were at rehearsal. It was a Greek restaurant, and once I had shoved my body into Spanx and the new dress I bought for the occasion, I was calmer. The group of family and friends was large and rowdy, the food excellent, and the serving staff and owners professional and fun.

I waited until the bride-to-be had a drink and food in her hands before sitting down to apologize. I spoke my truth, listened to hers, and we made peace. Someday, if she has a child, she will understand. Or perhaps not. Feeling lighter than I had in a few hours, I leaned into the celebration and had a great time.

It was a perfect dinner. I visited each table and mingled. I ate and enjoyed myself.

Hours later at the rental house, my family listened and validated my feelings, and then we stayed up too late laughing and catching up. I didn’t sleep well in the rented bed next to Mr. Snore Fest, who had no trouble sleeping, but I was up and packed the next morning, ready to go.

Although I had yet to write the speech Darcy asked me to give.

*I lived in the moment and thus no pictures.
